Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems:
a research-oriented Masters program

Thilo Kielmann, VU University, Amsterdam

All current computer systems are dealing with both parallelism and
distribution. Even smartphones nowadays have multiple processor cores
for parallel execution of their apps, and obviously, they are part of
large-scale, Internet-based distributed systems. Our M.Sc. program on
Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems (PDCS) focuses on all aspects
of such systems, ranging from large-scale and parallel computing, via
clouds and Internet security, to really small-scale systems like sensor
networks.

In this presentation, I will first give an overview of the PDCS curriculum.
Next, I will highlight some of our research on cost-efficient cloud computing.
I will conclude my presentation with some useful information about getting
funding for studying in Amsterdam.
